Agulu–Nnewi Road Undergoes Fresh Roadworks Amid Questions Over Quality and Durability

The recently constructed Agulu–Nnewi Road, delivered under Governor Charles Soludo’s administration, is undergoing another round of roadworks, raising fresh questions about the quality and durability of road infrastructure in Anambra State.
Footage shows asphalt removal
Anambra Socials’ footage shows heavy machinery removing sections of the existing asphalt, with large heaps of broken road material piled along the carriageway.
The development comes amid growing public criticism over the rapid deterioration of some recently constructed roads across Anambra State.
Contractor intervention and questions over timing
Following complaints about failing roads, the Anambra State Commissioner for Works reportedly summoned contractors to address construction standards and demand improvements.
Could the ongoing work on Agulu–Nnewi Road be a direct response to that intervention?
While the connection has not been officially established, the timing raises important questions.
Why should a road reportedly constructed less than a year ago already require sections of its surface to be removed and replaced?
The precise completion date of the section shown, the technical reason for the current works and any link to the Commissioner’s directive have not been independently confirmed in this report.
Durability and value for taxpayers
Road maintenance is necessary, but taxpayers deserve infrastructure built to last, not repeated repairs shortly after construction.
What do you think? Is this evidence of improved quality control or another example of questionable construction standards?

Contract context and what remains unconfirmed
New Telegraph’s October 2024 report identifies an 18.6-kilometre Nwagu Agulu–Nnobi–Nnewi contract lot valued at approximately ₦33.56 billion. A contract award date is different from the date a particular section was completed or accepted.
The state government’s 15 October account confirms the contractors’ meeting. It does not identify this exact work site as a direct result of the directive.
The video establishes that asphalt removal and machinery were present when recorded. It does not show the original completion certificate, repair instruction, contractor’s diagnosis or who will pay. Until those are available, the description “less than a year old” remains an attributed claim rather than a verified age for the recorded section.
