📍 Umusiome, Nkpor, around Ochiaya, Buzuzu Street, Anambra State.

Another community in Anambra State is facing a serious erosion disaster, with residents raising the alarm over a rapidly expanding gully threatening homes and properties.

According to a resident narrating the footage, at least two houses have already been destroyed, while the erosion continues to advance towards other residential buildings.

Resident footage supplied with this report, identified as Ochiaya, Buzuzu Street, Umusiome, Nkpor. The reported loss of two houses and the alleged source of stormwater are attributed to the resident.

The footage reveals a frightening situation:

🔴 A massive, deep erosion gully with steep, exposed soil walls.

🔴 Collapsed concrete structures, broken masonry and building debris scattered inside the gully.

🔴 Severely undermined ground dangerously close to existing residential buildings and boundary walls.

🔴 Extensive soil loss suggesting continued erosion could threaten more structures if nothing is done.

What Is Causing This Disaster?

According to the resident, stormwater flowing from neighbouring Ogidi is channelled towards this location, where it allegedly contributes to the worsening erosion.

The visible damage is consistent with severe runoff erosion, potentially aggravated by inadequate drainage, concentrated stormwater discharge and the absence of effective erosion-control measures.

However, a proper engineering assessment is needed to establish the precise causes.

The resident insists that the situation has gone far beyond what individuals or the community can manage.

THIS IS NO LONGER A MINOR DRAINAGE PROBLEM. IT IS A THREAT TO HOMES AND HUMAN LIVES.

We call on Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, the Anambra State Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Works and relevant erosion-control agencies to urgently investigate this site and implement lasting solutions.

Anambra cannot continue to watch communities lose their homes to preventable or manageable environmental disasters.

How many more houses must disappear before meaningful intervention comes?

Ndi Anambra, what should be done to address the growing number of erosion disasters across our state?

Earlier reporting and the government’s account

The Sun reported on 29 July that Umusiome residents had appealed over erosion and flooding affecting the Ogbeudo/Government Technical College area, and described engagement with the Works and Environment commissioners.

An official report published on 28 August says Environment Commissioner Clem Aguiyi inspected an Umusiome-Nkpor erosion site on 25 August. It attributes some of the problem to drainage termination and construction practices and says the team would document the damage for intervention planning.

These accounts establish that erosion concerns in Umusiome had been publicly raised before this video. They do not conclusively identify the exact gully in the recording or verify the narrator’s figure of two destroyed homes. The named Ochiaya/Buzuzu Street location and the alleged flow from Ogidi remain attributed to the supplied account.

Confirmation of the affected plots, drainage route and any completed intervention would require location-specific records and a current inspection.
