UGA, Anambra State. A lawyer has called for urgent security intervention over allegations of reprisals following the death of Mmesoma Umeorini in Uga, Aguata Local Government Area. The alleged reprisal deaths have not been independently verified by Anambra Socials.
In a report published on 25 October, SaharaReporters said human rights lawyer Ikechukwu Obasi raised the concern in a statement dated 24 October.
According to the report, Obasi cited a social media post alleging that two men from Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, had been killed in Uga and that eight others were being targeted. These are attributed allegations, not a confirmed casualty count or a police finding.
Appeal to prevent retaliatory violence
SaharaReporters reported that Obasi urged Governor Charles Soludo and security agencies to intervene, protect residents and investigate threats. He also appealed for calm and warned against turning the case into an intercommunal conflict.
Anambra Socials has not independently authenticated the originating post, identified the alleged reprisal victims or established when and where any such attacks occurred. The material reviewed for this report does not contain a police confirmation of those alleged reprisals.
What police have separately confirmed
A 24 October report in PUNCH, quoting police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga, records the arrest of Chima Ofoeke in connection with the suspected murder of 23-year-old Mmesoma Umeorini.
The police account says her mother reported that she had been missing since 16 October. Operatives working with Agunechemba personnel in Uga arrested Ofoeke, whom the command identified as her alleged former boyfriend.
Police said the suspect allegedly admitted involvement during preliminary questioning and led detectives to where her remains were recovered. The Commissioner of Police directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for further investigation.
That announcement concerns the investigation into Mmesoma’s death. It does not confirm the separate claims of reprisal killings.
Supplied footage: what it does and does not show
The visible street activity does not establish anyone’s identity, state of origin or role in the allegations. No person shown should be identified as an attacker or victim on the basis of this recording.
Justice through lawful investigation
Responsibility for an alleged offence belongs to the individuals involved. A person’s place of origin is no basis for threatening or attacking others.
Authorities should clarify the situation promptly, investigate credible reports and protect anyone facing threats. Residents with direct information should report it to the police or other appropriate security agencies, rather than publish identifying details or unverified accusations online.
